Old Time Favorites - Photos from InternetFeeling nostalgic?

If you are anywhere from 18-25 years old, maybe, you are going to a phase in your life where you wish you were back in your childhood days. You begin to trail back to the years when you had few ‘real’ problems. Then that weird comical feeling sinks in and you are brought back to bliss and comfort.

Inside the bookshelf

Mom always read those fascinating stories of Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty all in search for Prince Charming. Stories of love, respect and bravery are also seen in the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. As years progressed, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, Rumplestiltskin and the Little Mermaid are replaced by Sweet Valley High and Archie Comics and to name a few

Who would ever forget the charming, carefree stories of Francine Pascal in her book series Sweet Valley High? The stories revolved around the lives of teenagers Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, beautiful blonde twins who lives in fictitious Sweet Valley, California. The series quickly gained popularity and spawned several spin-off series. The last Sweet Valley book, Sweet 18 in the series Sweet Valley senior year was published in January 2003. The books are generally classified as young adult’s or kids fiction, although probably many of the series loyal fans are now approaching their early thirties.

Archie Comics, the well loved American comic book is seen in attics, boxes and inside trunks of adults.

Set in the small town of Riverdale, the comic series features the life of fictional teenagers Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle and Jughead Jones characters created by Bob Montana. Most of the comic books topic revolves around the trivial matters faced by teenagers. There is the rivalry between best friends Betty and Veronica. Matters in high school and the teenagers function in their society.

The Rise of Pop Sensation

During the early 90’s came the boom of boy bands, chick rockstars and solo popstars. Backstreet Boys serenaded us with ‘Quit playing games with my heart’ and ‘ As long as you love me’. A1 with ‘Just like a rose’, Westlife with ‘I lay my love on you’, BoyzIImen with ‘Four seasons of loneliness’, N’Sync with ‘This I promise you’, and 98 degrees with ‘I do’. All of them dominated MTV and the airwaves.

Not to be misladen by men came TLC with ‘No Scrubs’, and ‘Don’t go chasing waterfalls’ then later Destiny’s Child promoting women’s independence with songs such as ‘Survivor’.

‘Hit me baby one more time’ by the then innocent Britney Spears made us grooved in the dance floors together with beat up songs of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Genie in a bottle’ and ‘Come on over baby’.

Latina sensation J.Lo also permeated the music scene with her ‘Lets’ get loud’ and ‘Waiting for Tonight’. Truly the songs of the 90’s came as mixed plethora of RnB, Pop songs, Ballad, and Rap.

Glued to the Boob Tube

Which kid doesn’t like sitting or lying in front of the TV for a whole day just to watch their favorite cartoons, anime, Mexicanovelas and other youth-oriented shows?

‘Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles’ is always a favorite among young boys not to mention ‘Ghostfighter’, ‘Dragonball’ and ‘Flame of Recca’. The action packed ‘Voltes V’ and ‘Daimos’ will always be preferred. Also there is ‘GI Joe’, ‘Transformers’ and ‘Thundercats’. Girls prefer watching ‘Jem’, ‘Sailormoon’ ‘Magic Knight Rayearth’ and ‘Skydancers’.

Back then, there were no Chinovelas, Koreanovelas, or fantaseryes so late night afternoon shows and early evening viewing are devoted to Mexicanovelas like ‘Marimar’, ‘Maria la del Barrio’ and ‘Maria Mercedes’ all of which starred the very alluring Thalia. Saturday afternoons are dedicated to watching youth-oriented TV programs such as ‘G-mik’ which stars the Prats siblings, Angelica Panganiban, Carlo Aquino and Heart Evangelista. ‘Click’, its counterpart, laid the acting foundations of Richard Guttierez, Angel Locsin, Danica Sotto, and Brian Revilla. Never forgetting their early counterparts from ‘Growing UP’ which starred Bobby Andrews, Angelu de Leon, Rica Peralejo and Onemig Bondoc. It was all started by the now defunct TGIS.

The early 90’s was a time when the Philippines was close to achieving former President Ramos’ dream of ‘Philippines 2000’. It is a time where the brain drain was just a word and the EDSA revolutions became the answer for a stubborn president to get of its post. After all the mayhem of the new era there was still this road to nostalgia, where memory thrives, where reminiscing those good old days come as a comfort to the fast changing world. There are still these treasured memories which still put smiles to our faces.

I admire the vividness and accuracy of the author's account of the 1990s. I myself am a dweller of the Era that Never Was, and I can say that the 90s wasn't all crap. I mean, I once idolized the likes of Stephano Mori, Mark Solis and Carlo Aquino (chick magnets they once were!). I listened to songs of The Moffats, hanson, Backstreet Boys and many other Boy Bands at that time. I was also (and will always be!) a frustrated member of G.I. Joe, a Real American Hero(How powerful American influence once was!). See, it was, somehow, a stepping stone for today's pop culture; We probably won't be having what we are having now if it wasn't because of the 90s.

But one thing I can never forget about the 1990s was the rise of Hip-Hop. I can remember my cousins and siblings wearing their pants low-waist just so they would look like Run-DMC members or MC hammer. And it tickles me to think of them rapping to the tune of Andrew E and Francis Magalona tracks.

Oh, and before I forget, I loved those "Baby-G" watches which were very popular at that time! hehe.

Mabuhay ang Dekada nobenta!
